Caller Attempts To Defraud Resident
Law enforcement agents became involved Monday when a resident reported a caller had attempted to defraud her.
The resident, age 67, reported to officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department that she had received a call earlier in the day from a man who claimed to be a representative of Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.
The caller told her she was the winner of a $2.5 million prize. He said that in order to collect her prize, she would need to give them $1,000 to cover processing fees.
The resident said that she told the man there was no way she could come up with $1,000 for them. She said that he then tried to bargain with her.
He told her that if she would give him $200 her claim could be processed. He even offered to come to her house and pick up the money in person.
The victim told the caller that, if she could come up with the money she would contact him. She said that when she asked for a contact number, the man hung up.
Authorities continue to warn residents about such scams. They issue a reminder that, should you become the legitimate winner of a sweepstakes you would not be asked to give them money prior to collecting your prize – you would be the recipient of the money.
